Donnington Castle was built by its original owner, Richard Abberbury the Elder in and the surviving castle gatehouse dates from this time. The castle was subsequently bought by Thomas Chaucer, the son of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, as a residence for his daughter Alice, who later became Duchess of . Donnington Grove is set on the outskirts of Newbury, overlooked by the historic Donnington Castle. This beautifully renovated 18th-century Gothic house is set in acres of grounds with its own championship golf course.
